Why Walking Slowly Feels So Much Worse Than Running in Horror Games

There’s a natural instinct in games: when something feels dangerous, you run.

It’s immediate. Automatic. Speed equals safety. Distance equals control.

But horror games complicate that instinct in a way that feels almost unfair.

Because sometimes, walking slowly feels far more terrifying than running ever could.

And the worst part is—you often choose to do it.

Speed Feels Like Control

Running gives you a sense of agency.

Even if something is chasing you, movement creates the illusion that you’re doing something about it. You’re reacting. Escaping. Creating space between you and the threat.

It’s active.

And in that activity, fear has less room to settle.

You’re focused on movement, direction, survival. There’s no time to overthink.

But horror games don’t always let you stay in that state.
